Cellular Jail
Located at Port Blair, stood mute witness to the
tortures meted out to the freedom fighters, who
were incarcerated in this Jail. The Jail,
completed in the year 1906 acquired the name,
'cellular' because it is entirely made up of
individual cells for the solitary confinement of
the prisoners. It originally was a seven
pronged, puce-colored building with central
tower acting as its fulcrum and a massive
structure comprising honeycomb like corridors.
The building was subsequently damaged and
presently three out of the seven prongs are
intact. The Jail, now is a place of pilgrimage
for all freedom loving people, has been declared
as a National Memorial.The penal settlement
established in Andaman by the British after the
First War of Independence in 1857 was the
beginning of the agonizing story of freedom
fighters in the massive and awful jails at Viper
Island followed by the Cellular Jail. The
patriots who raised their voice against the
British Raj were sent to this Jail, where many
perished. |

Ross Island
The small island with its treasure of ruins in
it become the hot tourists spot in the
territory. People desire to know more and more
about Ross Island. This Island the erstwhile
capital for the most of Andaman Islands from
1858 until 1941. Ross Island was also the base
for the British Administrator of the penal
colony in Port Blair.In 1941, the Japanese
converted the site into POW camp, and built war
installations, remnants of which can still be
seen. It now lies deserted, and the few signs of
its colonial glory, such as the Chief
Commissioner's house and the Anglican church,
are dilapidated and overgrown. The area is now
under the control of Indian Navy. |

Corbyn's Cove Beach
Just 07 Kms from the city the most picturesque
sea-beaches called Carbyn's Cove. This beautiful
beach is ideal for sea bathing and sun-basking
with a facilities of fresh water bathing Room
and changing Rooms. |

Viper Island
Viper Island a small serene, beautiful island
"Viper Island" witnessed the untold sufferings
the freedom fighters had to undergo. Dangerous
convicts found guilty of violating the rules of
the Penal Settlement, were put in fetters and
were forced to work with their fetters on in
this island. The jail called Viper Chain Gang
Jail at Viper island, where prisoners deported
from the mainland during British Regime. |

Mount Harriet
It is the highest peak in the South Andamans
(365 metres high). One can trek up to Madhuban
through a nature trail and can find rare endemic
birds, animals and butterflies. The scene of
this peak is also printed on the backside of
Rs.20. During British Raj, this highest peak was
established as the summer headquarters of the
Chief Commissioner. This place is an ideal for a
nice and a fascinating over view of the outer
islands and the sea. |

Chatham Saw Mill
This Saw Mill is one of the largest and oldest
Saw Mill in Asia, built on a tiny island, is
connected to Port Blair by a bridge. It is a
store-house of timber like Padauk, Gurjan,
Marble, Satin Wood, etc. This Mill was built by
the British Govt. in 1883. This island has the
second largest wharf of these islands, where
Island - mainland ships can berth. |

Havelock Island
An independent Island with a wide beach (Radha
Nagar Beach) recorded the seventh best beach in
Asia. This island is about 38 Kms from Port
Blair, that's provides idyllic resort in the lap
of virgin beach and unpolluted environment.
Camping facility is available on RadhaNagar
Beach,at the western tip of the island,where
dolphins and turtles can be spotted from the
long stretches of white sand. |
